What a development announcement does—and does not—tell you

A headline can describe an ambition, a decision or a completed facility. Before deciding what a project means for your street, establish which of those you are reading.

Keep four questions beside the announcement

1. What is the exact project and location?
2. Who issued the information, and when?
3. What stage does the source explicitly describe?
4. What would need to happen before residents could use it?

Treat these as reading prompts, not a legal assessment of an approval. A project can involve several separate decisions, sites or stages.

Do not promote the status yourself

“Proposed”, “approved”, “under construction” and “open” are not interchangeable. Record the language used in the source and follow its supporting documents. A target date remains a target unless a later source establishes delivery. An opening announcement may also describe limits on access or use.

Read the record before comparing headlines

Our Development Watch pages separate source dates, confirmed details and questions that still need checking. Compare those details with the original announcement. If two reports differ, check whether they refer to the same stage and time period before assuming one is wrong.

Ask a question that can be answered

Instead of “When will everything be finished?”, ask about a named stage, access point or service. Include the project name and the dated public source you are referring to. Keep private property documents out of public submissions to the news site.
